All aboard the Algoma Central Railway for a 'rail wilderness adventure' in
our camp car - Canyon View
Your journey begins at our depot in down town Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario,
Canada, where in the morning prior to train departure, you will be able to
load your gear into the Camp Car, after which you will board a coach on
train number one, our regular passenger service, for an incredible 114 mile
excursion to the world famous Agawa Canyon wilderness park.
Once in the Canyon, the Camp Car will be set-off at its designated site on
the house track, and train number one will continue on north to Hearst,
Ontario. Canyon Park Rangers will be on-hand to run through the Camp Car's
operating systems and answer questions or offer suggestions.
The 'Canyon View' is a former Green Bay and Western caboose, fully
equipped to accommodate up-to four persons comfortably. On-board facilities
include a small galley kitchen with bar size refrigerator, separate dining
area with 3/4 size refrigerator and a three piece bathroom with shower.
There is one bedroom with a single bunk bed and a lounge area with two
double sofa beds. A diesel generator provides electricity and the car is
fully air conditioned.
The Camp Car comes equipped with all linens, dishes, cooking utensils and
drinking water. The only things you need to bring are your food, beverages
and personal items. PLEASE NOTE: Canyon Park is a remote wilderness
location, only accessible by rail and we ask that you remember to pack
accordingly.
As well, there is a private out-door area nestled in the trees setup with
a gas barbecue, screen house, picnic table, lawn chairs and a campfire pit.
The car also comes with two canoes outfitted with paddles and personal
flotation devices.
Agawa Canyon provides a breathtaking back-drop to your eco-adventure. The
park itself is kept in pristine condition with trails leading to the most
scenic spots, including four sets of waterfalls. Hiking opportunities
extend beyond the park with trails on top of the canyon wall.
Bird life in Canyon Park is incredibly varied and includes a variety of
raptors such as golden eagles, broad wing hawks and American
Kestrels.
The Agawa River is home to brook or speckled trout and there are numerous
pools within easy canoeing distance. A fishing licence is required and it
would be appreciated if you would consider the conservation practice of
catch and release.
So whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or rail-fan, looking to hike,
canoe, swim, just relax or capture the incredible beauty of the area with
film or paint, Agawa Canyon Park is a true oasis in the northern wilderness
and an incredible setting for anyone who loves nature.
